“Homeless” by Anna Quindlen Essay

In this story â€Å"Homeless† Anna writes about analyzing what homeless don’t have and to look at them differently, it all started by a women named Ann and there she had realized of the homeless. She, Quindlen, knows what Ann is talking about how home is very meaningful, I also understand. Hopelessly Quindlen terminates that our faculty of being home has adjusted. During the time, I originally discord with Anna that the homeless are the one to give tender feelings. She convinced us to focus on what they needed other than who we think they should be. Feeling that she had pulled my strings at the beginning by reason of she decided upon as her homeless person not a crazy lady but a woman she had met at the Port Authority terminal that claimed that she’s not really homeless. Ann pulls out a photo but not a weapon I sensed Quindlen had ambushed me. I admit that â€Å"Home is where the heart is at† after all I also eulogize my 2 bedroom apartment that is occupied by nine people. Yet it keeps us secured and stable. Home is where memories are made, kept and given. The homeless that I’ve seen are mostly men walking around asking for money most of them don’t have card-boards to live in. They seem to scare me. I’m afraid that one of these days they’ll abduct me and maybe I’ll end up spiritless. When mother and I go for a walk in the area of East Los Angeles I hold her close to me, we’re both constantly on guard because the homeless are everywhere. I feel like running home where I can hide and have protection. In one’s view, a person can’t be fulfilled without a permanent home for many cases. A person without a permanent home is similar to not living. If it’s a temporary home then the person would be frustrated for the reason that he or she won’t be able to live in a home for long and wants to have a life where she or he can keep inviting guests and have a home where that person will be able to do anything. On the other hand, if it is not a permanent home nor a temporary home this is an incomparable situation seeing that a person who is homeless isn’t achieving anything and not experiencing how it feels to have a home. Seeing others eating well, dressing well, having a healthy life is not making the homeless feel satisfied for what they have-not. Assuming that Quindlen’s essay was about how the homeless require a home alike any other human, this case which I acknowledge here and now, the purpose can do more than that an unimaginable home where a person can confidentially do anything just plenty that we need to produce the homeless. Quindlen mentions however she does not adjust on those who prevent shelters because of personal reasons they have been through the past. We should know their needs as well. And we need to consider providing a place free of fear for those who, instead of wanting to paint a room blue, would like to read a book or watch a movie on TV. I agree, that home is everything, Ann needs a home that she can call her own, but to be a compassionate people, we should take the time to understand and help even those who don’t have pictures of yellow houses in their soiled bags.

Disney: The Decision

Eisner and some of the executives were very interested in expanding and building a new theme park. When they were attending a meeting in Virginia, they were impressed by the post war restoration. The idea of building a theme park with American history as the main idea came to Eisner at that time. The idea became a plan and soon the executives of Disney found suitable land that was affordable with all amenities. An international airport was nearby; the land would not create any environmental issues. It was also near an interstate highway. The politicians of the state were also for development and growth.The land identified with all these benefits was in Prince William County in the heart of Virginia’s Piedmont region. What Eisner may not have known at that time was that the Piedmont region was home to some of Americas most influential and wealthy people. The region had also fought off several developmental projects from that area. Once the announcement was made by Disney about the building of the theme park, opposition started rising from most of the wealthiest people from the region. There was also opposition from various organizations like The Piedmont Environmental Council.Why Disney America was never built The various organizations started mounting negative publicity against Disney. Disney being an image conscious company was put in a dilemma. Eisner was of the view that the project had to go on. He was also supported by the Virginia’s Governor George Allen. In spite of various campaigns by Eisner, the opposition kept mounting against the project with historians and journalists joining the bandwagon against Disney. All the opposition finally caught up with Eisner who decided that continuing with the project was not worth it.The decision was made because Eisner knew that if the park was opened in spite of the opposition, after it was opened, it could lead to further trouble, especially from the historians. The need for focusing on the other proj ects and the risk to Disney’s reputation were the most important aspects that made Eisner decide not to go ahead with the project. Eisner decided that deciding not to go ahead with the project was the best option under the circumstances. If he had continued with the project, there could have been opposition from Historians who were already campaigning against the project.If Disney had to concentrate all its efforts on the Disney America project then there was a risk of losing focus on its other business concerns. There was also the risk of losing the reputation of Disney that had been built for years. These were the main reasons for ending the project, but the other reasons were because of the problems in the management of Disney where one key executive had died and another had resigned. There were also rumors that there was a leadership crisis in Disney. All these reasons made Eisner deciding against continuing the project.The best choice under the circumstances This was als o the best choice that Eisner had. The project seems to have become a personal ambition for him. He had made remarks in a press release that would not have benefited the company. He also took it upon himself to go ahead with the project. This led to irrational thinking. Monitoring various projects would have actually become difficult if the company had so many hurdles in just a single project. The situation for the Disney company at that time was not good with the EuroDisney making a huge loss and the number of visitors dropping.Fighting a legal battle with the opponents of the park in Piedmont would have drained the resources of the company financially. There is evidence to suggest that Historians would have found fault with the many historical scenes depicted in the theme park, if it had been built. The Piedmont community and the environmentalists were also preparing for a legal battle with monetary contributions pouring in. This would have led to a long legal battle if the park h ad been built. So it was best in the interests of the company that Eisner decided not to go ahead with the building of the Disney America theme park.

A distribution channel is defined as a set of intermediaries performing a variety of functions. These interdependent organizations are involved in the process of making a product or service available for use or consumption. Marketing channels for a product are considered one of the more important decisions made for a product. It is believed that these channels not only serve the markets that the products move thru, but they make the markets. Distribution channels determine the price thus the profit of any given product. The final stop for any product/service is the consumers, what channels the product move through has many options. One very important decision in the channel is the push verse pull marketing. A company’s push strategy uses a sales force and other promotions to pursued intermediates to carry, promote and sell the product to the consumer (Kotler & Keller, 2009). This strategy is most effective when market share or name recognition is low, when consumers have no brand loyalty and product benefits are well known. In contrast, pull strategies use advertising and promotions to provoke consumers to request the product from intermediaries. The strategy is successful when consumers make a choice prior to purchase and choose based on brand loyalty and name recognition. A company must first identify the types of intermediaries available to assist with distribution to the consumer. When Colgate-Palmolive developed the new Precision toothbrush, they had to determine the distribution channel for the product. Like its other products, the Precision toothbrush would be sub-contracted to Anchor Brush. Anchor Brush would produce the new toothbrush (which required three different types of equipment), warehouse- hold inventories, and handle transport- channel is responsible for ensuring quicker delivery. Precision’s positioning as a niche or mainstream product played a major part in the pricing and production schedules being determined. Each positioning had a different effect on pricing and adequate supply for the market. The product positioning also determined what markets and where the product would be sold. Since research had shown the new product would create a new market of consumers and Colgate-Palmolive was an established brand in the toothbrush category, a â€Å"pull strategy† would seem effective. CP could collaborate with Anchor Brush, and sell the niche Precision toothbrushes in food and drug stores. Selling a mainstream Precision toothbrush would send product to mass merchandisers and club stores. Prior to the introduction of Precision toothbrush, Colgate-Palmolive did not sell directly to dentist, a definite area of opportunity for the product, whether niche or mainstream. Colgate-Palmolive like most companies developed a product and determined what distribution channels would be used to get the final product to the end users/consumer. A production, warehousing, and transporting partner were used to move the product to the final stage of the process, retail stores for consumer purchase. Colgate-Palmolive could benefit from using a sales force that worked directly with dentist to distribute the Precision toothbrush. This partnership between the niche product –Precision and dentist would increase awareness and provide â€Å"expert† endorsement to the new product. Once the demand was increased- fueled by dentist promotion, Precision can be moved to a mainstream product with little adjustment in production and warehousing. Colgate-Palmolive’s uses a vertical marketing system strategy to move the Precision toothbrush to market. Colgate-Palmolive is the channel captain with name recognition and the product ideal that the producer, warehouse, and transporter collaborate with to produce the product.

Where they came up with a list of the character of the Filipinos classified as to be our strengths and weaknesses, and these are the following for the strengths which includes pakikipagkapwa-tao, which includes bayanihan, utang na loob and pagdadamayan; Family orientation wherein Filipino families are attached with their family members; joy and humor which would still seen after a tragic event;flexibility, adaptability and creativity, hardwork and industry, faith and religiosity and the ability to survive, these strengths are really noticeable compared to the characters of the foreigners. On the other hand, the weaknesses are also here, and these would include extreme personalism, where an individual always relate things personally; extreme family centeredness where there’s an excessive concern for the family; lack of discipline, that includes lack of precision and compulsiveness, poor time management and in procrastination; passivity and lack of initiative that includes being too patient and long suffering for our diseases to the extent that we do not respond into it; colonial mentality, building preferences based on the foreign stuffs; kanya-kanya syndrome, lack of self analysis and self reflection. In this program, they focused in strengthening our weaknesses, which is really essential to further analyze the disease of our sick nation. In former senator’s program, she also proposed strategies that targets the roots or factors of these Filipino characters and these are the home environment, social environment, culture and language, history, educational system, religion, economic environment, political environment, mass media, leadership and role models. For former Senator Shahani, for us to be able to implement the strategies we should have a clean hands and pure hearts , she also believe that a strong national character based on patriotism, unity, honesty and self reliance is our ultimate and surest defense and our greatest hope lies within us. Based on former Senator Shahani’s moral recovery program, we can analyze that we have a lot of national character that serve as a threat that may lead to our country’s destruction or lead to â€Å"sui-policide†. So what should we do to prevent that â€Å"sui-policide† and the interlocking diseases? Does Senator Shahani’s proposal would really help? We, in our group believe that Shahani’s proposal will really be a great help in preventing that sui-policide. We believe that If we caused that interlocking diseases we must also be accountable to cure these diseases. We must start change within ourselves. We must be open to admit our weaknesses and furthe r strengthen it. From being passive, we must change and be aggressive in terms of responding to our nation’s diseases and in checking our government’s performance. We must also develop patriotism, unity, honesty, and self reliance because it is the ultimate and surest defense for that interlocking disease. We must learn to value our state, for us to be able to have an urge to save it from its destruction. We should abolish selfishness, extreme personalism, extreme family centeredness, colonial mentality, lack of self analysis and self reflection. And lastly, we must learn to be responsible in our actions, develop self discipline, for laws, even how strict it is implemented if we, citizens are not following that laws these laws will be useless. For us to have a progressive Philippines, we must build our people, our nation, how? Through what is former Senator Shahani suggest and we quote †Building a nation is through eliminating its weaknesses and developing our strengths. We must look at ourselves objectively, with scientific detachment and also emotionally,lovingly and when appropriately with disgust. Goblin Market by Christina Rosetti Essay Goblin Market by Christina Rosetti I believe this poem tells a story, a story about temptation and lust, about the desire to obtain something the narrator clearly is not meant to take or have. It has similarities to the Story in the bible about the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve have been told You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for if you eat you will surely die. When I read the poem by Christina Rosetti it makes me think about that story because of the opening lines I ate and ate my fill, Yet my mouth waters still; The narrator, like Adam and Eve, felt discontented with what they were getting. They were always going to want more, never satisfied. There are subtle hints that the narrator should not be eating the fruit, but this makes the fruit taste better and more appealing. The words that have been used are double edged for example Cherries worth getting On it own this sounds innocent and appears to be about fruit! The double meaning here, I believe, suggests that something or someone is desired. Wanting to taste but not being quite sure; this also links with virginity, untouched and this is where the lust comes in I think the words Christina Rosetti has chosen are extremely clever because you have to read the poem time and time again to get the true meaning; this keeps the reader interested for longer. Every time you look at this poem you find something else you didnt notice before. I feel that to try and pull out the striking words would not be of benefit, as they are all seemingly striking and without the rest of the poem attached they would not appear as exceptional; I believe this would not be doing justice to the poem. For example the word Pellucid to me is very striking but alone, without the rest of the sentence, it makes no sense and the feeling is not the same. The line Pellucid grapes without one seed To me has much more of an effect and shows a lot more about the narrators emotions. I think the tone of this poem is unpredictable as there are different meanings. When you first read this poem and you see that it is about fruit, one may start to feel that the narrator is babbling, as it does not make a great deal of sense. For example To-morrow night I will buy some more; and kissed her. This, in the context of fruit, seems out of place and somewhat irrelevant. It is only when you read the poem again, this time realising that it is not quite as innocent as it first seemed, that the tone changes; it becomes more exciting and profound. I would say that the mood of the poem changes when the realisation of the poems true meaning sinks in. While the poem just seems to be about fruit I found the persona offered no excitement or anticipation. This changes quite dramatically when you realise that the poem is actually quite unconventional as it is hinting at a sexual relationship between two women. For example Cheek to cheek and breast to breast Locked together in one nest At this point the voice then seems to become playfully mischievous. There are a lot of similes in this poem, for instance Like two pigeons in one nest I think Christina Rosetti wanted the reader to really visualise what was going on; also I feel that she used simile to create a feeling of anticipation, using a familiar image of closeness. Like two flakes of newly fallen snow Is very clearly talking about two people who are having a sexual relationship, but also telling us that it is the first time and in actual fact they are both virgins. Snow, when it has just fallen, is untouched and perfect in everyway thus symbolising purity. Not a bat flapped to and fro Round their nest Is an example of the use of metaphor in this poem. People do not sleep in a nest and yet these two people are being likened to animals. This I believe creates a feeling of peacefulness, nothing moving. This is representing that they have reached a climax and they are now enjoying the serenity of the moment. An illustration of the use of personification in this poem is Wind sang to them a lullaby The wind of course cannot sing but the image is used to create a peaceful atmosphere. I image it would be really calming and relaxing to have the wind singing a lullaby. Alliteration is not strongly used in this poem I could only find one example which is And sugar sweet their sap I feel this is to heighten the readers experience, making them almost taste the sugariness, thus allowing the reader to really get in touch with what is happening in the poem. This poem uses a lot of run on lines an there are only two full stops in the poem. I think this increases the anticipation as well as the feeling of expectation as you can never see how it is going to end. The metre is quite smooth and sinuous and it is used by the narrator to keep the sequence of events told in the poem flowing. The tempo and manner of the poem, as I said earlier, changes when you realise its true meaning. I feel that this happens to keep the suspense. This poem has a sporadic rhyming style because some lines rhyme and others dont but I feel that this is in keeping with the rest of the poems style as it is all rather unconventional.

The Gospel Of Matthew In Depth Analysis Religion Essay In my analysis of the Gospel of Matthew, I found out that it was written with a focus on the King and His Kingdom. Significantly, the concept of the Kingdom that comes from the Greek word ÃŽÂ ²ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ±Ãƒ Ã†â€™ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ¹ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ »ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ µÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ¯ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ± appears 55 times in the Gospel of Matthew, 55/126=43.65%. Jesus clearly said that All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. (28:18). Likewise, the term kingdom of heaven transcends in the Gospel of Matthew by appearing at least 33 times. Interestingly, this phrase is found only in Matthew. In this sense, I believe that Matthew introduces the Christ and His Kingdom as the fulfillment of the messianic prophecies of the Old Testament. His approach to the way of salvation is a call to repentance for entry into the Kingdom, to a commitment of a person to the King as His follower. Jesus stated many will come from the east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven (Matt. 8:11). It becomes clear that Jesus not only moves the meaning of the Kingdom beyond the Jewish community, but He also moves the mission of the Kingdom beyond family ties. For instance, when Jesus emphasizes on whoever does the will of My Father lays the meaning of Kingdom membership open to other people than the Jewish community. Jesus took His disciples to Caesarea Philippi to ask the question, Who do men say that I am (16:13). In this context He stated that He would build His church in the world. Another idea is if we are to be participants in the kingdom of heaven, then we are to live by the rule of the King. a) The Lineage of the King Matthew uses language that relates the rule of Christ to peoples lives by mentioning the lineage of the King (1:1-17). The genealogy of Jesus is presented in three sections with fourteen periods for each. The summary marks off fourteen generations from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the captivity, and fourteen from the captivity to the coming of Christ (1:17). Through this lineage God fulfills Hs promise to Abraham that in his seed, all the earth would be blessed and that the Messiah would come through the seed of Abraham. In addition, Matthew is showing Jesus as born of Mary and not begotten by Joseph (1:16). b) The Birth of the King The birth of the King is referred to in three ways. First, Matthew points out Jesus Christ as the Messiah (1:18). Second, Jesus is the Savior (1:21). Third, Jesus is Immanuel, meaning God with us (1:23). In verse 22 is a statement frequently used by Matthew: that is might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, sayingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦ Matthew selected a passage from Isaiah which states that the birth of the Messiah would come through a young woman, and that His name would be called Immanuel, God with us. Matthew quotes Isaiah as saying that the virgin will be with child, and will bring forth a Son (1:23). In Matthew, the word à Ã¢â€š ¬ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ±Ãƒ Ã‚ ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ¸ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ­ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ½ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ¿Ãƒ Ã¢â‚¬Å¡ is interpreted as virgin. The birth of the Jesus through a virgin is the biblical affirmation that God actually became man (1:25), and that God entered the world in the person of Jesus (1:21). Matthew affirms that Jesus Christ was born of the Virgin Mary. He also affirms that He was conceived by the Holy Spirit (1:18), which means that in some miraculous way the Holy Spirit ushered the life of the eternal Christ into the body of Mary and here a person was conceived and born who is the true expression of God and the one expression of true man, Jesus. Matthew affirms that the birth of Jesus was confirmed by the angel of the Lord (1:20-21), and contextualized by the Scriptures (1:22-23). c) Johns Announcement of the King John the Baptist was upon the Jewish scene like a flaming voice from God. He came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, acclaimed by the people as a prophet of God (3:1). He saw himself as only a slave for the coming Messiah and as the voice to prepare the way (3:11). His ministry was respected and understood because people came from Jerusalem and from the total region to Johns ministry (3:5-6). His baptism was understood as a baptism of repentance (3:11). Matthew notes the character of John the Baptist as the forerunner of the Messiah. John was indeed a voice of transition from the old covenant to the new (1:11-14). John announced that the baptism with the Spirit and the baptism with fire as superior to his baptism with water (3:11). d) The Inauguration of the King Matthew describes the transition made from John the Baptist to the proclamation of the Messiah Himself. John had been the announcer of the coming of the King and His Kingdom (4:12-17). In this passage, Matthew describes the context and content of His ministry. The context is Galilee with Jesus moving from Nazareth to Capernaum by the sea (4:12-13). Not only did Jesus begin His ministry in a setting where many people might hear Him, but His move to Capernaum from Nazareth was a breaking of the ties with His home and community. The content of the Jesus message is stated in verse 17. Jesus preached the same message which John the Baptist had been announcing: Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand (4:17). The word preach is translated from the Greek word ÃŽÂ ºÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ·Ãƒ Ã‚ Ãƒ Ã‚ Ãƒ Ã†â€™Ãƒ Ã†â€™ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ µÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ¹ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ½ that means the heralds proclamation. I believe that preaching is an announcement with both certainty and authority. Jesus proclaimed the gospel of the kingd om (9:35). Church A significant emphasis in the Gospel of Matthew is the church. In all of the Synoptic Gospels, the concept of church as ekklesia is found only in Matthew. It is clear that Matthew introduced the church as the fellowship of disciples who evidence the rule of Christ, or the reality of the Kingdom. In this sense, Jesus introduced the church in response to Peters confession, as the ultimate redemptive purpose of the Christ. It was when He introduced it that Jesus also told His disciples of His coming death and resurrection. It seems appropriate to affirm that Matthew expressed the acts of God in salvation history. The church is not parenthesis in salvation history as we wait for the coming Kingdom of God, but it is rather the activity of the Kingdom of God in the world. It is this Kingdom that penetrates all nations, Jew and Gentile, to extend the grace of God to all people. a) The Disciple Community I believe that Jesus strategy to establish His church was to develop a disciple community. He called a group of associates who would be with Him and learn from Him (4:13-21). Jesus began by calling Peter and Andrew (4:18). Matthew states that Jesus said to them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men (4:19). He was moving these men from their occupation as fishermen to recognize the vocation to be disciples. Jesus next called the two brothers, James and John, sons of Zebedee, from their occupation of fishing, asking them likewise to follow Him (4:21). At least the reference in Matthew tells us that upon Jesus call, they immediately followed Him (4:22). Jesus called disciples who would in turn disciple others. He called them to be fishers of men (4:19). Jesus called disciples and asked them to put Him and His will above all else (8:18-22). Another clear example was the calling of Matthew, the tax collector (9:9). His calling to be a disciple places the authority of Jesus over o ccupation. Matthew gives the list of the twelve disciples called by Jesus and gave them power over unclean spirits, cast them out, and heal sicknesses and diseases (10:1-4). b) Discipline in the Church Women God has created man and woman under His image. The writer of the Gospel of Matthew highlights the events when Jesus ministered to women throughout the Gospel. The word ÃŽÂ ³Ãƒ Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ½ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ · has two connotations. The first connotation of ÃŽÂ ³Ãƒ Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ½ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ · with the meaning woman in the singular form appears 9/49 in the Gospels representing the 18.36%. The second connotation of ÃŽÂ ³Ãƒ Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ½ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ · has to do with the term wife. This term appears 14/35 in the Gospels representing 40%. The last connotation of ÃŽÂ ³Ãƒ Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ½ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ · found in Matthew means women. The times that Matthew uses the term women in his gospel are 5/15 representing 33.33%. a) Jesus view on women The question that I have always had is: How did Jesus view women during His ministry? In my analysis of the Gospel of Matthew, I found several references that serve as evidences that Jesus had a clear perspective on women. In fact, prominence is given to four women who are named in the Messiahs lineage such as Tamar of whom Judah begot Perez and Zerah (1:3); Rahab who is spoken of as the harlot of Jericho in Joshua 2:1-7 (1:5); Ruth who was a Moabite (1:5); and Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, the woman whom David seduced, and whose husband Uriah he afterwards killed in an attempt to cover his sin (1:6). Jesus elevates the status of women by stating that the marriage commitment is binding for life and that the only exception is immorality, which has already broken covenant (5:31-32; 19:1-12). Jesus made no distinction between women and men even though He often addressed men, holding them accountable for their responsibilities. Miracles Jesus not only preached and taught. Matthew records that He healed all kinds of sicknesses and diseases among the people (4:23-25). His ministry was one of restoring people to wholeness. The man who preached radical change, who announced the Kingdom, was performing deeds of mercy. He healed and restored common people to wholeness and elevated them to a sense of worth. He restored their spiritual well being as He preached and their physical well being as He administered healing (4:24). Matthew concludes this section to show how popular the ministry of Jesus actually was (4:25). This description is an affirmation of Jesus popularity as a teacher. He attracted people from all over the land of Palestine to both learn from Him and to be healed by Him (4:24). Furthermore, Jesus touched persons at their point of need and from that point of need led them to the experience of faith. The ten miracles reported in chapter 8 and 9 express Christs authority over disease, over demons, over destructive forces of nature and over death. They were performed out of compassion and confirmed the authority of the Christ. a) Healing Diseases Jesus expressed His authority in miracles over illnesses and diseases. After Jesus came down from the mountain where He had delivered His sermon, Matthew says that great crowds followed Him and became witnesses to His deeds (8:1). Matthew inserts the story of the leper coming through the crowd and worshipping Jesus (8:2), and Jesus reached out, touched, and healed him (8:3-4). Then, the writer inserts the story of the centurion approaching to Jesus in humility and asking to heal his servant from paralysis (8:5-6). Without going to the mans home, Jesus simply said, Go your way and healed him that very moment (8:13). Jesus also healed Peters wife mother that suffered from fever (8:14-17). There is another miracle over paralysis in Matthew 9:1-8 that is more brief than that of either Mark or Luke, emphasizing on the teaching and meaning of Jesus acts. Later, Matthew shares three consecutive stories of miracles including the ruler of the synagogue, the woman with a hemorrhage, and the bl ind men (9:18-31). b) Casting Out Demons Matthew records the story of the demon-possessed. The Greek word ÃŽÂ ´ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ±ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ¹ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ¼ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ¿ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ½ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ¹ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ¶Ãƒ Ã…’ÃŽÂ ¼ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ µÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ½ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ¿ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ¹ indicates the presence of demons inside of a person. Matthew states that Jesus cast out demons with a word (8:16). In another account, the story involves two men who were living among the tombs that presented signs of violence (8:28). The men were so fierce that people were afraid to pass near them. There is an indication that the two demon-possessed knew who Jesus was (8:29). Matthew records that the demons came out and went into the pigs and the pigs perished (8:32). Matthew gives us another testimony of Jesus casting out a demon in a mute man (9:32-33). c) Miracles Over Nature While crossing the Lake of Galilee a great storm swept down upon them. The Greek word à Ã†â€™ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ µÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ¹Ãƒ Ã†â€™ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ¼Ãƒ ¡Ã‚ ½Ã‚ ¸Ãƒ Ã¢â‚¬Å¡ means earthquake emphasizing the violence of the storm (8:24). The disciple had great fear and awaked Jesus to cry, Save us, Lord; we are perishing! (8:25). Jesus first tested their fear, emphasizing their little faith (8:26). He recognized the faith they had, and He rebuked the storm (8:27). Discipleship The Sermon on the Mount is recorded in Matthew 5:1-7:29. Matthew presents Jesus as the Messiah of word and deed. The sermon, as recorded by Matthew, includes numerous passages that Jesus gave, recalled by Matthew under the guidance of the Holy Spirit to give us a presentation of the teachings of Jesus. The message was given primarily to His disciples, although doubtless the crowd listened as he introduced the sermon (5:1-2). In presenting this sermon, I believe that Jesus called for a change in the thinking of the disciples about the Kingdom of God. Jesus calls His disciples to be humble (5:3), living with repentant spirit (5:4), showing meekness (5:5), longing for God (5:6), mercy (5:7), purity (5:8), peace (5:9), and gladness (5:11). The calling of disciples was a central aspect of Jesus ministry. a) The Influence of Being a Disciple Jesus followed the beatitudes with two designations of the disciple: salt and light. I believe both designate a service beyond itself, and both are important in human experience. Jesus addresses them as characteristics of the people that live in His Kingdom. In my understanding, when Jesus says, You are the salt of the earth (5:13), it has to do with purity, preservation, and flavor. The disciple as the salt of the earth makes the earth more authentically as it should be. On the other hand, I understand that when Jesus says, You are the light of the world (5:14), it has to do with radiance, openness, and joy. What an incredible calling from Jesus to His disciples to be salt and light in the world. They obtain the light from the One who is the light of the world, Jesus. For this light to be seen we live openly in the midst of the world as His disciples witnessing His ruling and presence of His Kingdom. Jesus gives a clear reminder about the harvest. Sowing and reaping go on together. Jesus speaks on reaping the harvest of Gods acts in salvation. The message to His disciples is clear: the harvest is great, the laborers are few (9:37). With this in mind, Jesus commissions His disciples to have influence over the world (10:5-15). b) The Spirit of a Disciple Jesus introduces us to some of the more important ethical teachings in the New Testament. The first is the prohibition against killing (5:21). He teaches that anything that leads to killing is sin, and He calls His disciples to be free from anger and take the initiative of reconciliation (5:23-26). The second issue that Jesus addresses is about adultery and the importance of keeping the covenant of marriage (5:27-30). The sacredness of marriage is emphasized in the prohibition against divorce (5:31-32). Another teaching is that Jesus calls for honesty without the oath. In other words, the disciple is to be honest and trustworthy making the swearing of an oath unnecessary (5:33-37). In addition, the disciple is to live by the higher law of love and respond to the treatment he receives from others in a way that reflects the freedom and love of Christ (5:38-42). Jesus also teaches us on loving our enemies as an expression of Christ love (5:43-48). Not only that but He also calls to love on the very nature and practice of the Father (5:45). There is a remarkable teaching from Jesus to His disciples in regards to the relationship between disciple and master. A disciple learns and identifies with His teacher, and the servant is not over His master. Jesus calls them to continue to learn from Him, to continue to follow Him, to continue to serve Him (10:24-25). c) The Lifestyle of a Disciple Having called the disciple to be mature in love, Jesus then turned to the matter of the lifestyle that a disciple should have (6:1-7:29). The beauty of this prayer, called the Lords Prayer, has been the model prayer (6:9-13). In this sense, I believe that prayer is opening our lives to God. It is inviting Him to acts in our lives. Prayer is relational (6:9). For His Kingdom to come is the experience we can have of His full reign now (6:10). He always sustains us with provision (6:11). He forgives us of all of our sins so we can forgive our debtors (6:12). It is a prayer to deliver us from the evil thoughts and actions we have committed and are not according to Gods purposes (6:13). Jesus also teaches that fasting is not to be a ritual, done by the calendar, but it is a voluntary time of meditation, or drawing near to God (6:16-18). In Matthew 7:7-11 there is a threefold command to ask, seek, and knock. These three words Αà ¡Ã‚ ¼Ã‚ °Ãƒ Ã¢â‚¬Å¾ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ µÃƒ ¡Ã‚ ¿-à Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ãƒ ŽÂ µ, ÃŽÂ ¶ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ·Ãƒ Ã¢â‚¬Å¾ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ µÃƒ ¡Ã‚ ¿-à Ã¢â‚¬Å¾ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ µ, and ÃŽÂ ºÃƒ Ã‚ ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ ¿Ãƒ Ã‚ ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ µÃƒ Ã¢â‚¬Å¾ÃƒÅ½Ã‚ µ are present imperatives in the Greek, which means continuous action (7:7). Another important aspect that Jesus wants as our lifestyle is our attitude toward others (6:14-15). Also in chapter 18, Matthew shares some very searching words from Jesus on forgiveness (18:21-29). Jesus expects from his disciples to have clear goals in life. He said that where a mans treasure is, there his heart is. When ones goals are set on the eternal will of God, his values reflect the same (6:19-21). In fact, He states, no body can serve two masters (6:24). We should have clear that the disciple is to give undivided loyalty to the Master. On the other hand, I strongly believe that respect for others is an indication on our self-understanding. In this sense, Jesus asks His disciples to avoid prejudgment or prejudice from stereotyping people (7:1-6).

Parental Involvement Parent Involvement has been an issue in the United States since before the turn of the nineteenth century (Wallace). â€Å"Parent Involvement† and â€Å"parent participation† are nebulous terms because there is an array of parenting behaviors that this could include (Hickman). Either way you define it, parents must get involved. What many parents consider ‘being involved’ varies from family to family. No one is better placed or more qualified than parents to make a difference in their child’s academic and lifelong education (Bourquin). Parents are the vast resource that must be tapped to increase student learning (Hickman). Parents are their child’s first teacher. The elementary age is the most crucial time for parents to get involved in their child’s education. Nothing affects the academic outcome for a child as much as the involvement of a parent (Bourquin). Mom and Dad are the most influential position to shape their child’s future. Parents have a greater opportunity to make a difference, teach, model and guide their children’s learning more than anyone else (Bourquin). Involvement allows parents to communicate with teachers about their child’s learning style and characteristics. This allows teachers to do a better job teaching the child, giving them a better opportunity for success (Heffer). The support of a parent is the single most important factor in predicting success in school for young children (Bourquin). Parents who make it a point to get involved with the child’s education are communicating the importance of education to their child (Heffer). There are a variety of ways in which a parent can get involved. This can range from at home help and encouragement with homework, attending athletic ... ...e parents explaining what is going on in the classroom and upcoming events that parents can attend. (Hopkings) Parent involvement affects all aspects of a child’s education. Parents must be involved as teachers, learners, supporters, and advocates of their child’s learning (Hopkings). Studies show that kids who know that their parents are involved and interested tend to take more responsibility for their own learning and behavior. Schoolwork and grades improve. Work habits improve. Less work is handed in late. Fewer referrals for behavior problems are made. Attendance increases, and fewer kids show up late for class (Hopkings). With all this information documented it shows the true importance of parent involvement in education. The more involved the parents are, the better off each child will be. So when you become a parent, get involved in your child’s education!

The Measurement of Intelligence through IQ Tests Can intelligence be measured? Does an IQ test actually measure a person’s intelligence? Does a high score indicate a genius? Does a low score indicate stupidity or merely ignorance? These questions have been asked over and over again by psychiatrists and scientists alike, but to date there are no clear answers. These questions cannot be answered without first defining what is meant by the term intelligence. Once intelligence has been defined then it should be easy to answer these questions; however, multiple definitions of the word tend to lead to further confusion. In a 1921 symposium entitled â€Å"Intelligence and Its Measurement†, psychiatrists were asked to define intelligence and their answers varied greatly. One described intelligence as â€Å"equivalent to the capacity to learn.† Other definitions included â€Å"the ability to adapt adequately to relatively new situations†, â€Å"the capacity to learn or profit from experience†, and â€Å"the knowledge that an individual possesses.† And one stated that there was no simple definition to the word because â€Å"intelligence involves two factors- the capacity for knowledge and knowledge possessed† (Sternberg & Detterman, 1986, p.39-40). Dictionaries add still more definitions: Funk & Wagnall’s defines intelligence as â€Å"The faculty of perceiving and comprehending meaning; mental quickness; active intellect; understanding† , while Webster’s defines it as â€Å"the ability to learn or understand or to deal with new or trying situations; the skilled use of reason.† While some of these definitions are similar, none of them are exactly the same. The definition of intelligence becomes even more complicated when one considers the work of Howard Gardner. Gardner claims that intelligence can not be defined with one definition because intelligence is not one thing. Gardner purports that there are eight different categories of intelligence: musical, bodily-kinesthetic, logical-mathematical, linguistic, spatial, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and naturalist. He is currently considering adding a ninth category of intelligence: existential (Carvin). Gardner believes that all people excel in at least one category of intelligence. However, he cautions teachers using the multiple intelligence approach in the classroom: â€Å"Do not label kids as ‘spatial, but not linguistic’ or, for that... ... when they arrive the store is out of bread. The children are then asked what they would do with points only being scored for the answer of going to another store; however, for children living in large urban ghetto areas the most popular answer has traditionally been to go home. Researchers argue that, considering the environment that these children live in, going home would be a much more intelligent decision than attempting to go to another store (Lawler, 1978, p.34). In a better way of explanation, when price of goods and services increase, the quantity demanded for foods and services will be decrease, vice versa. There are some reasons that show that why there is an inverse or negative relationship between price and quantity demanded. Firstly, since everyone likes to save money and buy cheap goods, so, consumers will only buy more goods and services at lower prices than higher prices, vice versa. Next, another reasons for negative relationship is diminishing marginal utility, which means, in a given time period, a buyer will feel less satisfaction from each successive unit consumed so consumers will only buy added units if the price was reduced. Lastly, there are the substitution and income effects of a price change. For the substitution effect, it states that an increase in the price of goods will encourage customers to buy alternatives goods, for example, when the price of meat increases, the quantity demanded for meat will be decrease as ... ... the indirect business tax increase, people will invest less and lead the aggregate demand to be decrease, ideally to a long-run, full –employment level of RGDP. By adopting and living her ideas he provides her a sense of unity with him even after he is gone. Gus’ letter reveals more than just about his own internalizations.His thoughts give secondary support to Hazel’s and maintain relevance to the reader because of its universality. In terms of the novel Gus’ letter provides the reader with an applicable question to think about. Curriculums in general, whatever its subject or class is, are all created to envelope the learning process of individuals learning their specific course to develop and acquire valuable and relevant skills in that specific field.The main learning approach commonly used in the curriculum teaching is based on a set of instruction, which are all directed to guide the students in the gradually process of learning in the curriculum. [Italics ours. ] Children know much more about drugs . . . than most adults do. † She adds: â€Å"Students who feel lost, unloved, lonely, bored, or insecure are most likely to experiment with drugs. †(2002, 51) Amira teaches in Guanajuato State, Mexico.She admits: â€Å"We face problems of violence and drug addiction in the family that directly affect the children. They are immersed in an environment in which they lea rn foul language and other vices. Another big problem is poverty. Although schooling here is free, the parents have to buy the notebooks, pens, and other materials. But food must come first. † (Johnson, 2002, 59) In the United States, recent shooting incidents at schools have highlighted that gun-related violence is not a minor problem in that land.One report states: â€Å"It is estimated that 135,000 guns are brought to the nation’s 87,125 public schools each day. To reduce the number of guns in schools, officials are using metal detectors, surveillance cameras, specially trained dogs to sniff out guns, locker sweeps, identification tags, and a prohibition against bringing book bags to school. † (Teaching in America) Such security measures make one ask, Are we talking of schools or prisons? The report adds that more than 6,000 students have been expelled for taking guns to school. (Johnson, 2002, 29)
